Australian rock band AC/DC was formed in 1973 by Scottish-born brothers Malcolm and Angus Young, who chose the band’s name because they felt the abbreviation AC/DC, alternating current/direct current, symbolized the band’s energy and performance style. In 1980, Brian Johnson replaced original lead singer and co-songwriter Bon Scott after his premature death at age 33. Later that year, the band released their best-selling album, Back in Black, and their next album, For Those About to Rock We Salute You, was their first to reach number one in the United States. After firing drummer Phil Rudd in 1983, AC/DC began a commercial decline, but Rudd returned in 1994 and has contributed actively to the band's renewed popularity since that time.
AC/DC has sold more than 200 million albums worldwide, including over 70 million in the United States alone. The band ranked fourth on VH1's list of the "100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock", was named the seventh "Greatest Heavy Metal Band of All Time" by MTV, and in 2004 ranked number 72 in the Rolling Stone list of the "100 Greatest Artists of All Time".
